ABOUT THE DECK:

Although I have released various designs of playing cards in the past, The Overlook deck is the one I have invested the most time and energy in creating and has resulted in a deck I’m not only proud of but excited to share with you – and for you to not only discover the layers of hidden meaning and Easters eggs it contains but to also awaken and tap into your ability to shine!

The inspiration for this deck of cards comes directly from my love and fascination of Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining film – and the numerous conspiracy theories and legends that surround it!  This was the first “horror movie” I ever saw…at the impressionable age of about 8 years old.  Ever since experiencing the deeply unsettling piece of cinematic genius that Kubrick created I went on to research the film and director every chance I could.  The numerous legends that surround The Shining and supposed hidden meaning and messages Kubrick was trying to tell us from behind the lens fascinated me and I felt would go hand in hand with the art of magic and the medium of a very special and unassuming deck of playing cards.

With that in mind I set to create a deck of cards not just for magicians or magic enthusiasts but also collectors, film buffs and horror fans all alike.  You do not have to be a superfan of the film to appreciate the design elements and details and you don’t have to be a magician to enjoy presenting the perceived “Shining” ability you possess, utilizing the built –in elementary level magic tricks that create a moment of impossibility.  This deck of cards is completely ordinary and can be used as such however with the right knowledge can unlock numerous super-un-natural possibilities.

The box design presents a more reserved layout and design, however upon further examination of the deco style elements you see the famous blood elevators, carpet pattern, keyholes, hidden revelations and more.  The satin matte black tuck case with spot gloss and embossed features immediately shows the quality of this deck and highlights its alluring uniqueness.  Journey deeper into the Overlook deck as you open the tuck to see a simple emblem of a triangle inside of a circle, the legendary Apollo pad pattern along with the famous Delbert Grady quote “You’ve always been the caretaker.” Framed with the numbers 6 8 0 1, however if inverted you see it actually reads 1 0 8 9.  This and the triangle/circle are elements within the box design that you can use to seem to have the shining ability of seeing the future or reading minds!

Upon extracting the deck you see the high quality "lunar" finish on the hunter green highlighted back design contrasting against the snow white outlines and spot fills.  This is where it really gets interesting.  The back design features not only a one-way layout but also individual markings so you can know exactly what card someone is holding or is on the table without having to see the face.  The hedge maze is the main background along with it being framed in by the blood elevator border with lots of metaphors and features based on legend and lore surrounding the movie all hidden in plain sight.  From Native American feathers, the Apollo rocket, tennis balls, moons, the Pleiades, kitchen knives and more.

The handling of these cards is clean and smooth as you fan and cut them you’ll see extra cards are included.  These are special cards that were created with the deck so you can create unexplainable and impossible moments as if you possess your own shining ability.  Reading minds, predicting the future, controlling people’s behavior – these are some of the amazing magic-trick based impossibilities you can do to amaze and freak out friends and family with this deck of cards.  By following the link with the QR code on one of the cards you will get taken to a secret instructional video where I, Shock Illusionist Dan Sperry : The Anti-Conjuror, creator of The Overlook Deck, show you how to do some amazing tricks you can instantly do with this deck of cards!

The jokers you will notice are a minimalist mirror frame with one possessing the ghostly image of a chair slightly out of the background frame.  This is a tip of the hat Kubrick’s use of mirrors and the eerie “vanishing / re-appearing chair scene” from the movie.  All of the face cards are custom done with our unique hex of blood red for the hearts and diamonds.  The four suits have their own custom designed pips with an axe chop through the hearts and the clubs and spades featuring small axe blades at the bottom.  The four aces continue and feature the retro theme with the ace of spades stating these are the 237 (Room 237) series and just the little artistic line element is actually two baseball bats like Wendy used to fend off Jack.

The only real splashes of color are reserved for the face cards.  The face cards are hypnotically alluring due to the never-ending secrets and surprises to discover hidden within the layouts.  Morse code, patterns, numbers, keyboards, time – there’s so much to mention and explain what everything means and points to within the deck but I don’t want to spoil it because I want YOU to experience your own journey into the unsettling secrets of The Overlook deck.

In the end I wanted to create a deck of cards that can be appreciated by magicians, cardists, collectors and fans of the film – really ANYONE!  A deck that had the look of a retro pack of cards that were branded to be sold in the Overlook Hotel gift shop back when it was in its heyday or maybe you’d see them in the game room at the resort…and only if you truly knew what you were looking at could you know the real secrets of The Overlook deck and even go so far as to perform impossibilities (what are basically easy to do magic tricks) with the deck as if you had abilities like “shining”.
